Travelling to Shollinganallur, Chennai all the way from my place was like taking a small vacation for me! The purpose of this vacation was for food tasting at “Famous Theory”, part of Hotel Centre Point. The place was easy to locate as it was on the main road, since I went in the afternoon, there was ample space for car parking, on crowded days it would pose a problem if valet is not available.
The interiors were neat, pleasant and very apt for corporate dining. This place is open all 24 hours. From the menu, we asked for Pepper mutton soup, masala crispy prawns, Thai green prawn curry with steamed rice for mains and tiramisu for dessert.
While we were waiting for the soup to arrive, they also served us a pineapple, orange and vanilla ice cream mocktail. The mocktail was predominantly dominated by the taste of pineapple and not being a big fan of pineapple, I did not enjoy it much. They also served papad with mint chutney, their mint chutney was something I fell in love with.
The soup arrived in a while, served hot with mutton pieces, a lot of curry leaves and pepper. The flavour had blended really well the authentic South Indian taste hit us instantly. We were asked if we wanted the food course by course or everything at the same time, since we choose course by course, our food all arrived with good intervals of time.
The masala crispy prawn served with a jalapeno dip was the best dish of everything I had! It did not have any smell of sea food, I was overjoyed by that very fact. The prawn was big, juicy and the masala battered on it was lovely.
One needs to develop a taste for Thai food, the Thai green prawn curry was made well, the chef had added brinjal to add flavour to it, which is not done normally in a Thai restaurant. In addition to brinjal, there was a variety of other vegetables added in the curry. With every bite, the taste of curry ended with a slightly burnt taste. They served steamed basmati rice with it which did not blend really well with the curry!
The dessert took a while to come, but when it came, the first thing which hit me was the smell of coffee! They had layers of cake soaked in coffee and then cream. It tasted fine but the whole tiramisu did not set well because the cake fell apart from the cream.
I hope they maintain this consistency of taste in the food in the future as well. The staff were kind, but only the senior staff seemed to have prompt knowledge of the food.
Though they did not charge me, they are not priced for an everyday meal place, but definitely for an affordable special occasion place.
