The new trend is to bring the old back! Adding to the list of restaurants who’s decor is to keep it traditional is Thambi Vilas in Habibullah Road, T. Nagar.
Charming is the word that comes to my mind when I look at their seating area! From the Gramophone playing old songs, the cushion less brown chairs to having paneer goli soda in their menu everything was perfect!
I wanted to have their mutton Kola urundai, my face shrank really small when he said that was not available. Just to keep my spirits up, my wonderful friends ordered Kalaki, mutton chukka and Kadamba fry (Squid), egg kothu parotta, chicken saalna parotta and mutton saalna parotta. Must thank the universe for my wonderful friends 😀
The staff there were confused, some dishes were served twice without us asking and some dishes we ordered the second time never came!
The Kadamba fry was the first to come, wrapped in banana leaf. The size of the squid was small and had some taste of the raw seafood which in general people who do not favour seafood gets it.
The saalna was next! there was vast differences in the chicken saalna and mutton saalna. The mutton saalna had more flavour to it and we loved it more than the chicken saalna.
The egg kothu parotta was nice with scrambled eggs, parotta and curry leaves. The Kalaki was something I never believed I would enjoy eating! Kalaki is an half cooked omelette, the omelette is not flipped to the other side but simply wrapped after adding onions. When cut into it, the gooey uncooked portion runs out 🙂 It seems like an art to me.
The mutton chukka came last! the tiny pieces of mutton roasted red with curry leaves was juicy and faired well but coming after main course was done did not seem like a good time to arrive.
We made a mental note to have their paneer goli soda to the end of the meal even before our first dish came 😀 and surprisingly we remembered our mental note which we generally tend to forget when it is something other than food ;):P
The paneer goli soda was FABULOUS!!
The prices of each dish seemed very nominal but the quantity they give would simply not be enough for someone with a large appetite.
